What is the aim of orthodontics?

To obtain a nice, harmonious smile and shape of face. As a side-effect you will be more confident to smile, your self-esteem and self-confidence will grow. Those who were shy to smile before will wear a smile from ear to ear after the treatment. Their appearance and presence will change. Their beautiful smile will result in physical and spiritual changes, too.
What is my role in this? To give help. I will help you to call forth a beautiful smile. This is my profession and the true beauty of my calling is to witness this physical and spiritual change throughout the months and years.

1. Diagnostics, consultation, treatment plan

At the first consultation I talk to the patients about what their complaints are, what they do not like about their teeth, I examine their teeth, the position of the teeth, the functioning of the jaw, we make an X-ray image and we take an impression of the teeth. This could take up to half an hour. We must find out what might be causing or sustaining this condition.
Once we have established the reasons I explain to the patients how and to what extent we can change their smile to beautiful. There are always different options! I give all relevant information about the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment and appliance. Our aim is to find the best solution that is the most suitable for that patient. This is our mutual aim so I always involve the patients in the decision making regardless of their age. Whether an adult or a child the patient must be aware of what to expect of what will happen to them.

2. The way, the process

The duration, the length and the success of the treatment greatly depends on the age and cooperation of the patient. The journey is not easy but we will provide all possible assistance to be able to get through and difficulties. It also means a change in the lifestyle of the patient such as brushing their teeth after each meal or the chopping of hard food into small chunks…
My motto is “the simple is beautiful and good”. I strive to choose the most simple, most effective and most comfortable solution for the patient.
The face and the shape of the face of the patient is very important. At the end of the teeth a real human is “attached”. The teeth, the bones support the softer tissues, the lips and the face. One of the “side-effect” of orthodontic treatment at adult age is that the area around the lips becomes smoother.
The main priority is to restore symmetry and function. These will bring about aesthetic restoration, too. Of course, a beautiful smile is the most important for the patient.

3. Age

Early treatment (pre-treatment)

This treatment is very effective and usually yields good results as it makes use of the natural development of the child. This can create the most harmonic, most beautiful shape of face. This is the age when it is the easiest to restore symmetry and function.
It might be worthwhile starting the treatment at a very early age. For example in case of bulldog bite, cross bite or forced bite this could mean treatment at nursery age.
Pre-treatment can be started on mixed teeth (when there are still milk teeth – 6-12 years old). This advantage is a disadvantage at the same time as it requires a high level of cooperation from both the child and the parents. Children of this age must be constantly motivated and controlled as initial enthusiasm might wear off.

Adult age treatment

After the development of the bones has finished we have to choose different treatments. Even at adult age everybody will have changes in the structure of their bones, joints and muscles but the pace and extent of these changes may vary. The good news is that this can be influenced by the patients themselves (lifestyle, sports, diet).
The other good news is that research and technological developments of the last decades have expanded treatment possibilities and age restrictions. (Our oldest patient started treatment at the age of 64. See pictures on the website at pictures)

4. Types of appliances

Each appliance has its own effect. The given case determines which of these effects will turn out to be advantageous or prove to be a side-effect. The real question is how I can use these effects in the given case as an advantage and how I can compensate for the side-effects.

Removable appliances (see picture on the webpage)
Advantage: For pre-treatment in childhood. It is removable so the teeth can be brushed well. It can control the growth resulting in the most harmonious and most beautiful shape on the face.
Disadvantage: It is removable thus it requires a great deal of cooperation (it is not effective when out of the mouth). More difficult speech (you have to learn to speak with it)

Fixed appliances (see pictures on the webpage)
Advantage: It is mainly for the moving and fine positioning of individual teeth. It is fixed (glued) so the patient is wearing it 24 hours.
Disadvantage: It is fixed so its cleaning requires more time and attention. Special toothbrushes are needed.

Internal appliances (picture, for example AO myharmony – without logo)
Advantage: you can not see it
Disadvantage: More difficult to speak (you have to learn to speak with it). It is more difficult to keep it clean.

Invisible appliances (invisalign) (picture Invisalign)
Advantage: you can not see it.
Disadvantage: Does not provide in each case as nice result as the fixed appliances, in more complicated cases its use is limited.

Accessories (HYRAX, Micro implants)

Advantages: With these accessories I am able to work effectively in more complicated cases, the effectiveness of the treatment enters a “new dimension”. I can bring about such movements of the teeth and thus I am able to solve cases that I would not be able to treat with traditional appliances or only with compromises.
Disadvantage: It needs very thorough cleaning and it means additional cost

Retention appliances

It is necessary after the treatment
Advantage: wearing only in the night, it is transparent, removable
Disadvantage: removable, you have to wear it

5. Quality

I only use good quality, certified, mouth-friendly materials. There are many mechanisms in the appliances that are protecting the teeth as the aim of the whole treatment is to get beautiful teeth.

6. Allergy

It is possible to find out if the patient is allergic to any of the materials used in orthodontics or which material is causing the complaints (loss of hair, red spots, bad skin). In these cases these materials will be eliminated.

7. Sport

You can do sport with your appliance (only with the fixed ones!) but in the case of contact sports you must wear a teeth guard suitable for the appliance!
(removable appliances must not be worn during sport activities)
